Cleverly painted sea-turtle sculptures have dazzled shoppers in The Gardens Mall since Aug. 19, 2013, when the display returned to Palm Beach Gardens for the second year.
The fiberglass turtles, each created by a team of students from high schools throughout the county, will be auctioned off during a fundraiser for the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. Prior to their auctioning, the turtles will receive votes from the public, and the sculpture that scores the highest number of them will receive cash that will go toward its accompanying school’s art department.
Seven sea turtles are in the running. The first-place finisher earns $1,500, second place get $1,000, and third place goes home with $500.
On Aug. 29, the mall will be the site of a private reception in its Grand Court. Time is 6 to 8 p.m. There, the cash prizes will be awarded, and the turtles will go on the block looking for the biggest bidder.
Tickets to the reception cost $35, which also goes toward the nonprofit turtle-research and care facility and visitor center on U.S. Highway 1 near the condos in Juno Beach. The turtles will remain on display until Sept. 2, when they will be taken home by their new owners.
